Stamp Sands of Gay, MI- Course Information. Location: Use your favorite internet mapping service to locate Gay, MI. I know mapquest can point you there. Registration is held at the Gay Bar. Gay is composed of maybe three or four streets, so it shouldn't be hard to find. The Gay Bar is also pink and somewhat hard to miss. Course: The RallyCross is held on the stamp sands by Lake Superior. Stamp sands can best be described as a very coarse sand but not quite gravel. Surfaces range from bumpy, yet soft sands to hard packed sands on some of the graded roads. Winter brings all variety of snow and ice. The couse layout varies depending on the layout of the graded roads and any stamp sand hauling that might be going on in the area. At the very least, expect a 1/3 mile course with a slalom, sweeping corners and a few hard corners thrown in for good meaure. Driving Tips: (Note that I'm a pretty crumby driver, but this might be helpful) Drivers in FWD and 4WD drive cars and trucks will find the sands very bumpy as their front wheels are clawing for traction. The soft sands also make for very little steering feedback in cars that have driven front wheels. I'd recommend a piece of tape on the top of your steering wheel so you can easily tell when the wheel is straight and avoid getting crossed up in the corners. I prefer RWD as the course seems much smoother and easier to navigate that way. Performace of RWD cars in the past seems to indicate this is the way to go. The Gay Bar: Definately something you don't want to miss before or after the event. The burgers are good and I'd suggest you try a foot of onion rings (they'll know what you mean by that).
